Aboitiz Group Sendong relief operations ongoing Friday, December 23, 2011
Aboitiz Foundation team together with the volunteers distribute goods to victims of tropical storm Sendong.
Responding to appeals for help by officials of Northern Mindanao, the Aboitiz Group was among the first to dispatch aid to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan in the aftermath of tropical storm Sendong.
Just hours after calamity struck, Aboitiz Group representatives were in Cagayan de Oro addressing the critical need for drinking water. Through its partner-organizations, close to 6,000 bottles of drinking water were immediately distributed in evacuation centers and affected communities. In Iligan, where Aboitiz business unit Pilmico Foods is located, company volunteers quickly began packing and distributing relief goods. The company also gave financial assistance to all its affected employees, some of whom lost their homes.
Over 11 thousand packs of relief supplies so far have been distributed to an estimated 80 evacuation sites and affected areas in both Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. Relief operations are still ongoing.
The Aboitiz Foundation has committed over P11 million in relief and rebuilding efforts focused on the two cities, says Aboitiz Foundation Chairman Jon Ramon Aboitiz. He said the Foundation intends to give more financial aid. The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation has also donated to the relief efforts.
Aboitiz Group companies nationwide have pitched in the effort, sending donations in cash and in kind. Thousands of bottled water, canned goods and other food items, clothes, blankets, slippers and assorted medicines, among others, are transported daily to the affected areas.
“We share in the grief of our countrymen in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan and we hope we can somehow lighten the burden of the communities affected by this tragedy,” Aboitiz said. “The Aboitiz Group has been in Mindanao for more than 50 years and we are committed to its development and the welfare of its people. We are ready to bring in more help as needed by our partner organizations, the local government units and national government agencies,” Aboitiz added.
