96 teams vie for 14th Aboitiz Football Cup; 2 new categories introduced in tourney Saturday, November 19, 2011
The Cebu Football Association (CFA), in partnership with Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., kicks off its 14th season today, Nov.19, at the Aboitiz Sportsfield in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
Ninety-six teams from different schools and football clubs will compete under a league-type tournament in different age brackets both in men’s and women’s categories. A total of 1,500 players are expected to participate.
For this year’s season, the following titles at stake are: Players 6, 8, 10; Boys 12,14; Men’s U-19, U-23; Girls U-17, men’s open and women’s Futsal.
CFA tournament director Eleazar Toledo said that for this year’s season, they did not limit the teams joining in each category.
They also added the men’s U-19 and men’s U-23 as new categories in preparation for the Philippine Football Federation's Smart and Suzuki regional finals in May 2012.
Toledo also said that the outcome of the tournament will be the basis in determining Cebu’s representative to any regional or national finals organized by Philippine Football Federation (PFF). It is also the best venue to scout players who will become part of the national team.
During tomorrow’s opening, five tickets will be given away to the participating teams. These tickets will serve as passes during the exhibition match of the Philippine Azkals against Los Angeles Galaxy (David Beckham) in Manila.
The Aboitiz Football Cup is the premiere football event and the longest running age-group tournament in Cebu.
