Aboitiz Foundation, AGAPP turn over day care centers to Cebu schools
Wednesday, September 7, 2011

Two non-government organizations will formally turn over today a total of 26 day care centers to local school officials as part of their commitment to support public school reforms being implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd).

Aboitiz Foundation President Jon Ramon Aboitiz and Pinky Aquino-Abellada, presidential sister and chairperson of the Aklat, Gabay, Aruga tungo sa Pag-angat at Pag-asa (AGAPP) Foundation  will lead stakeholders in a turnover ceremony at the Casino Español in Cebu City. DepEd 7 Director Recardo Borgonia and principals of the beneficiary schools will also be present at the event.

Aside from the ceremony at the Casino Espanol, Aboitiz and Aquino will also turn over facilities to the Gabi Elementary School in Cordova town and to Mabolo Elementary School in Cebu City.

Last May 26, the Aboitiz Foundation formalized its partnership with AGAPP and the DepEd to build a total of 45 school buildings for pre-school children across the country within two years. Aboitiz Foundation will appropriate funds for the construction of the school facilities, while AGAPP will provide age-appropriate instructional materials and training for teachers, and DepEd will field in the teachers.

The project’s construction design is modeled after AGAPP’s “Silid Pangarap,” which involves building one-storey, two-room school-library facilities in depressed and disadvantaged communities. One room is for holding classes while the other room may be used as a library.

The project is also in line with DepEd’s K+12 System, which requires universal kindergarten education for all Filipino children. Those who do not undergo kindergarten cannot proceed to grade one.

The Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. is the concrete manifestation of the Aboitiz Group’s strong commitment to corporate social responsibility.  Guided by its mission, Helping People Help Themselves, the Foundation addresses social and economic development needs of less privileged communities and members of society in areas where Aboitiz companies operate.  The Foundation acts primarily through chosen programs in education, enterprise development, primary health and child care, and the environment, in order to improve the quality of life of its beneficiaries.
